Before getting a Hedgehog:
Before purchasing a hedgehog, it is important to do research and understand what it takes to take care for a hedgehog. They make wonderful pets and friends, but they are special animals and require some special care and a lot of love. I recommend reading all you can about hedgehogs. I really like Hedgehog Valley's website and her book "The Hedgehog Primer." (http://www.hedgehogvalley.com/) Feel free to contact us if you have any questions regarding Hedgehogs and their care. Not all veterinarians treat hedgehogs, so we recommend finding a vet near you that has experience with Hedgehogs.
Why get a hedgehog from Family Hedgie?:
Once you have decided that a hedgehog is right for you, it is important to get one from a breeder. I would also caution you about selecting a breeder wisely. It is sad to say, but some people only breed hedgehogs for money and they end up having way too many hedgehogs for them to adequately love and care for each one. You want to find a smaller breeder with lots of experience. I am happy that you have found this site because we pride ourselves in being wonderful hedgehog breeders. We have over 15 years of hedgehog experience and nearly 10 years as a breeder. We only have a few hedgehogs in our home so that we can treat them with the special devotion that they individually need. All of our hedgies get daily personal attention and are treated like members of the family. Babies are held from a very early age and will be very used to being handled by the time they are ready to go to new homes. All of our hedgehog parents come from trusted breeders and have strong healthy lineages. This significantly helps insure that our baby hedgies are happy and healthy. We have never had a hedgehog get WHS and will offer a complete refund or new hedgie if your hedgehog succumbs to WHS*. We do offer lifetime support for your hedgehog and can be reached any day if you ever have questions. We also offer free nail trimming at any time. Many hedgehog owners struggle with trimming hedgehog nails and end up ignoring the task, which can be dangerous and extremely sad for the little hedgie. Please feel free to schedule with us anytime that you would like to bring your hedgie over for a bath and nail trimming.
Purchasing a Hedgehog:
We do charge $200 for our baby hedgies to insure that the new hedgehog owners are serious about providing a good home for the hedgie. This adoption fee also allows us to spoil your hedgehog while he or she is still with us. Each baby hedgehog comes with a "Hedgie Bag" ( a cotton/fleece snuggle pocket for them to sleep in and feel secure), a bag of food that they are weaned on, a toy, and our lifetime hedgehog support including free nail trims and our guarantee against WHS*. We have found that the hedgie bag and the same food really helps the baby transition from leaving mom to being welcomed into your new home.
When we have babies available we will have them posted on this site. If we do not have hedgehogs available, you can join our waiting list. A $50 non-refundable deposit is required to be on the waiting list, but this deposit will go towards the final cost of the hedgehog. Baby hedgehogs are first shown to the waiting list (at approximately 2 weeks old) and the people on the waiting list are given the first chance to "claim" which baby they want. If there are still babies available after the waiting list has seen them, we will then post pictures on this blog. A $50 deposit is still required to hold a hedgehog for you. The deposit is non-refundable, but does go toward the final cost of the hedgehog. (ie: $50 deposit, and then the remaining $150 when you pick up the hedgehog). The $50 fee to be on the waiting list also counts as your deposit.
Payments can be made with Cash or Cashier's Check. Online payments are accepted through Paypal, but a 3% service fee must be included for using Paypal. ($51.50 instead of an even $50)

Location/Delivery:
We are located in Fort Collins, CO. You may stop by and visit the hedgies by scheduling with us through email. The hedgehogs are usually ready to go to their new home by about 6 weeks old. It is buyer's responsibility to pick up the hedgehog before the baby is 8 weeks old. We often travel to Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, and Denver. We can usually arrange to meet you somewhere and deliver the hedgehog, but there is a fee for our travel and time. (SLC, ABQ or LV- $50, Denver- $30)
Please feel free to contact us with any of your questions. familyhedgie@gmail.com
*In the tragic case of WHS, we will need to see a professional diagnosis from a veterinarian (paid at your expense). We can't refund your money, but will put you on the top of our waiting list for a new hedgehog. (We have never had this happen)
